Bread and Roses is a soup kitchen in Lawrence which brings hope and caring to hundreds of people in the Merrimack Valley. Each month, over 40 volunteers from St. Augustine prepare and serve approximately 150 to 200 guests on a specified night. In the winter months, our parish cooks up and serves a hearty, home-style dinner of soup, meatloaf, potatoes and corn topped off with an ice cream dessert with fruit and/or sweets. Our meatloaf dinner is one of the favorites at Bread and Roses. In the summer months, we serve sub sandwiches with macaroni salad and a fresh garden salad.
There is always enough food to go around, no matter what the night. For so many of the guests, the hour or so they spend at Bread and Roses is their only communication and socialization of the day.
It is truly an inspiration to see this ministry in operation. No job is ever too large or difficult to accomplish. All volunteers are willing to do whatever it takes. Thank you all for continuing to support this wonderful ministry and making a difference in peoples’ lives!
St. Augustine’s commitment is the fourth Tuesday of every month.
