Our Program

In forming disciples of Christ, catechesis is taught through the community of faith, experiential learning, prayer, liturgy, and outreach to the community.  For this reason, your child’s presence and participation are essential.

Attending Mass is central to faith formation.  Please join us for the 9:30am Mass every Sunday that is especially geared to young families.  We look forward to seeing you there. Also, please let us know if your child is interested in being an altar server or a member of choir.

A special thank you goes to our volunteer teachers.  Please consider joining us in this important ministry to our children.  Training and support will be provided throughout the year.  You may also consider co-teaching with a friend or two.  Discounts apply to registration fees.  Please contact us for further information.

Evaluation

Part of the Religious Education program each year is a review and assessment of the curriculum that students have learned up through their grade level.  This is not a test, but will serve as a way for parents and teachers to see what knowledge the students have acquired and what points there might be confusion about.  Students will be given the completed assessment to take home and share.  Please call with questions or give us your feedback at any time to help make our program a success.

First Grade

Students begin their preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist  in grade 1 and will be using the series “Call to Faith” published by Our Sunday Visitor. There are twenty-one lessons in the book divided into seven units: Revelation, Trinity, Jesus Christ, The Church, Morality, Sacraments & Kingdom of God.

It is important that the children in first grade learn the “Sign of the Cross” and prepare to learn the “Lord’s Prayer”, “Hail Mary” and “Glory Be” before entering second grade.

During the 202/2021 School Year, our first grade students will be taught from home

Detailed lesson plans will be emailed out to parents so they may participate in this experience with their child. We look forward to being in a greater partnership with our families this year in the education of their children.

Grade 1 Schedule

Second Grade

This is a most wonderful year with the reception of two sacraments, First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Children in grade 2 use the book “Encounter with Christ” to prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, also published by Our Sunday Visitor. During the first part of the year (from September to January) the children will focus on their First Reconciliation and will learn about making right and wrong choices. They will receive their First Reconciliation in January.  Once reconciliation takes place, the children will receive their First Eucharist book.  They will learn about Jesus, who is present in the Eucharist and his great love for us.

The two books invite the children to prepare to receive the sacraments by listening for God’s voice through scripture and reflection.  The books use language and visuals that engage the children.  They also provide a variety of activities in each session.

The children should know the “Sign of the Cross, Lord’s Prayer and Hail Mary”.  Please practice with them at home. Prior to reconciliation they will become familiar with the Act of Contrition.
We will also be learning about the parts of the Mass including the responses made by the congregation.

We will practice receiving unconsecrated hosts prior to their First Eucharist.  If your child is gluten intolerant, please let me know as soon as possible as the hosts contains a small amount of gluten.

It is extremely important that your child does not miss class unless they are ill.

During the 2020/2021 school year, we will be offering classes on Sunday morning and Tuesday afternoon.   We will also offer a virtual class (via Zoom) on Tuesday afternoons for those children whose families are not comfortable with our in-class option.
