Welcome to our Religious Education Program – we are so excited that you have decided to take this step in your faith journey. In addition to our lessons we encourage all our families to attend Mass on a regular basis – why not come along to our 9:30 Family Mass!
We would also ask parents to support their children by working with them on any assignments we may send home and to pray with them daily.

First Grade

Outline of 1st Grade program

Students begin their preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist  in grade 1 and will be using the series “Call to Faith” published by Our Sunday Visitor. There are twenty-one lessons in the book divided into seven units: Revelation, Trinity, Jesus Christ, The Church, Morality, Sacraments & Kingdom of God.

It is important that the children in first grade learn the “Sign of the Cross” and prepare to learn the “Lord’s Prayer”, “Hail Mary” and “Glory Be” before entering second grade.

Outline of 2nd Grade Program

This is a most wonderful year with the reception of two sacraments, First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Children in grade 2 use the book “Encounter with Christ” to prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, also published by Our Sunday Visitor. During the first part of the year (from September to January) the children will focus on their First Reconciliation and will learn about making right and wrong choices. They will receive their First Reconciliation in January.  Once reconciliation takes place, the children will receive their First Eucharist book.  They will learn about Jesus, who is present in the Eucharist and his great love for us.

The two books invite the children to prepare to receive the sacraments by listening for God’s voice through scripture and reflection.  The books use language and visuals that engage the children.  They also provide a variety of activities in each session.

The children should know the “Sign of the Cross, Lord’s Prayer and Hail Mary”.  Please practice with them at home. Prior to reconciliation they will become familiar with the Act of Contrition.
We will also be learning about the parts of the Mass including the responses made by the congregation.

Since this is such an important year we would ask that your child tries to attend all scheduled classes.

We will practice receiving unconsecrated hosts prior to their First Eucharist.  If your child is gluten intolerant, please let me know as soon as possible as the hosts contains a small amount of gluten.
