You have made us for yourself O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. These famous words of St. Augustine have guided us this past week during our parish mission. We entered the restlessness of life and looked at where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. The purpose of the parish mission was to enter more deeply into our relationship with God. I hope and pray you were able to do this with us.
St. Augustine says at the conclusion of his Rule, that all Augustinians profess to live by, that we should have the Rule read to the Community once a week, so the Community can see how faithfully they are living, according to the Rule. He uses the imagery of a mirror. When we look into mirror, we see ourselves as we are. We cannot hide from what the mirror shows us, but we can change things if we do not like what we see. A parish mission gives us the opportunity to do the exact thing St. Augustine recommends. A parish mission is a retreat where we step back and look at our life and how we are living. The restless journey is a way to do this. If we like what we see, great. If we do not like what we see, we can change what we do not like.
If you attended the mission in person or online, thank you for entering the restlessness. Let the restlessness take you to great and wonderful places. If you did not attend, I truly encourage you to do so by attending the mission on the parish website. The beauty of technology allows this to happen.
It was a joy to be with you at St. Augustine Parish, and I hope and pray our paths will cross again. Let us enter the restlessness and journey together to God.
God bless us all!
